Sensed Father's Illness
by Brian R. Muldoon
My dad and I had experienced some rough moments when I was navigating the teenage years. Nevertheless, as I grew older I realized that much of what he had said to me was true. I was a parent myself now and his knowledge had brought me closer to him in spite of the memories of the past.
I was at my part-time job , a Teamster position in a trucking business warehouse, so different than my full-time office job. I was in the warehouse loading trucks when without warning mental images of my father began to flood my mind, accompanied by extreme waves of emotional sadness. Tears began to fall and I could not control what was happening to me. Embarrassed, I quickly headed back behind the stacks of material to dry my eyes unseen by others.
As I emerged from the back, I heard on the loudspeaker I had a phone call. It was my brother telling me that my dad, who was with him, was having some chest pain. My dad had not been to see a doctor in 35 years and was the pinnacle of health, or so we thought. He got on the phone and said not to worry... it was only indigestion. But because of my prior experience, I told him that if he did not go to the hospital immediately, I would come over and drag him there. He went. His heart stopped 20 minutes after arriving. They restarted it and he lived 20 more.
